Solo Report

Wow, we are five (5) into our nine (9) event 2017 season already! The best was to summarize our Aug 13 Solo Points Event #5 is it just keeps getting better! It was a fantastic fifth Solo Points Event at Traders World, what perfect hosts! Another record setting crowd, this time 140 competitors which was one more than the previous 2017 record with 28 novice entries and 50 weekend memberships! Thanks to the hard work of the solo committee (couldn’t do it without them) and the cooperation/quick change overs by everyone we were able to give everyone six (6) runs on a fun and challenging course by Evan Frank! Tightest margin of victory went to Pat Witte in his M3 over Brian Walker in an RX-7 by 0.009 secs in the Street Tire index class. Michael Jeffries in his ’16 SCS Miata eeked out the fastest time on PAX just beating Joe Gordon in his ES ’03 MR2 by 0.075 secs. Christian Moist had the fastest raw time his Pro Class DMod Birkin 7 with a time of 30.390 sec over Tim Viars in his STS Miata with a time of 30.838 secs. Thank you, everyone! Can’t wait to see what we can do for our next event!!!

We also assisted Miami University and the City of Oxford host a TireRack Street Survival School at Miami University on Aug 19. In my opinion and that of every student and parent with whom I spoke, it was a huge success. See Tact’s article regarding that event.

Along the line of future events, we have we have six (6!) more days over four weekends to go play at Traders World until the end of the season. Two of those will be joint events.

Sept 16 & 17 is a joint Event with Miami Valley Sports Car Club (MVSCC). We are continuing the tradition of a joint event with them, this time at Traders World. Sep 16 is the MVSCC event (using their class structure) and Sep 17 is Cincy SCCA PE #6 (using our standard classing). Registration for both events are on www.myautoevents.com but are separate. We are planning to have a party on Sat at Traders World after competition, but need to make desire there is enough interest. Discounted prices will be available for chicken dinners or pizza as mentioned in our CincySCCA Facebook page. Trailers can be left on site over night, but no camping is permitted.

Points Event #7 will be Oct 8 at Traders World

Oct 28 & 29. This is a joint Points Event with Western Ohio Region SCCA (WOR) and continues that tradition. Sat, Oct 28, will be a Points Event for WOR. Sun, Oct 29 will be Cincy’s last Points Event of the year. Should be a great time. Expect a party Sat night if the Sep joint event party is a success. Trailers can be left on site, but no overnight camping permitted.

Fun Event, Nov 5. We will celebrate our 2017 season with a non-points event (all the events are fun, right?) at Traders World. If you only have three events, this event can count as a qualifier for year end points, but there will be no points accrued.

Year End Points. Had a number of questions about this so I will attempt to set the story straight here. Year end trophies will be awarded per class for those who qualify (as adjusted by number of qualifiers in class.) The entrants best five (5) points count toward year end points, four (4) events minimum are necessary to qualify. Trophies will predominantly be awarded as they are at the events, 1 trophy for 1-3 qualifiers in class, 2 trophies for 4-6, 3 trophies for 7-9, 4 trophies for 10-13, etc with some flexibility for close battles, etc.

If you have ideas on how to improve things next season, gone me a shout.

Sincerely,
Kent Weaver

TireRack Street Survival

On Saturday, August 19, Cincinnati Region SCCA partnering with the City of Oxford and Miami University to hosted the TireRack Street Survival.

We had 9 students attended this special driving school designed for newly licensed driver to learn car control and awareness in real life situations. Students went through emergency stopping practice, lane change, skidpad, tight S-curves, and slalom exercises, first to learn their car’s capabilities and to gain confidence, and then to learn the danger of distracted driving; having their cellphone in their hands.

During lunch time, we brought in a full-size semi and parked several cars around it and had each student (as well as us instructors!) get in the cab and “see” how many cars they couldn’t see, to raise awareness when driving near semis. Airbag detonation was another fun awareness experience. This explosive exercise reinforced the fact that these are serious devices that while increasing crash safety, can also cause harm if not respected.

We appreciate all the volunteer instructors and course workers for making this valuable experience possible for the teen drivers. Also, special thanks to Jason Evans and Dart Logistics for providing an amazing truck for the semi demonstration. Finally, we would like to thank City of Oxford, MUPD, OPD, SCCA, BMWCCA and the TireRack Street Survival program for all of their efforts in making our event a success, and we hope that we can work with everyone in the future to make subsequent events even better.

Rally Report – August, 2017

11 teams competed in Jim’s July Jaunt on a hot Saturday afternoon. We made it short before the worst heat set in and because everyone is busy this time of year. Everyone finished-eventually; only 1 team got lost, but since they drove up and down the one street that had what turned out to be the toughest question, they got it right and finished with a perfect score. Congratulations to Steve Munday and his crack navigation team of teens Jacob & Makayla.

In a three way tie for second were John & Dick Krehbiel, Joe & Mary Beth O’Gorman and Jim & Bob Zeisler with 1 point. All but one other team was in a tie for third with 2 points. Those teams were Gordon & Teresa Benson, Gary & Brigitte Spicer, Terry & Denise Challenger, Gordon Maciulewicz & Paul McGloin, Tom O’Gorman & Dave Montgomery and Scott Giles & Renee Hines. Bringing up the rear were our beloved speedsters EB Lunken & Tim Silver. A huge thank you goes to Rally Master Jim Knepper, who jumped in with both feet and set up a beautiful and varied drive with a quick turn-around time. As a side note – Jim is also letting me borrow his truck to tow the trailer to Mid Ohio for the Todd Cholmondeley IT Spec*tacular, even though he can’t go himself. We’re getting a good one here folks!

Our next rally date is August 26. Details will be coming soon. Look for a Facebook post and email with details. Save the date!
