Solo: Cancellation of Tire Rack Toledo ProSolo

SCCA made an announcement of Cancellation of July 29-31 ProSolo.

SCCA.com – Cancellation of Tire Rack Toledo ProSolo

ProSolo Enthusiasts,

What we have feared for the last couple of months, but hoped would be avoided, has come to pass; the site we use for National Solo events in Toledo will not be available for the July 29 – 31 ProSolo. Therefore, that event has been cancelled and will not be replaced on the 2018 Series calendar. Refunds will be made over the next two weeks to those entered in the event.

Section 20.10.A of the ProSolo Rules is being modified to address, to the degree we can, the resulting circumstances from this cancellation. The new rule language is below.

We hope you understand that on occasion situations arise that are beyond the control of the SCCA or its Regions and we must make the best of it. The Northwestern Ohio Region and the Toledo Express Airport are to be commended for their efforts in trying to keep this event on the 2018 schedule.

Thanks for your patience on this matter and for your support of the Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Series.

H.

SCCA Senior Director of Rally/Solo

RoadRally Report

The May event is in the books and the rain held off just long enough for all the competitors to arrive at Applebee’s. The results are listed below. We welcomed two new competitors, rookies to both SCCA and the rally scene. Ty Bradley and Tanner Miller had a very respectable finish and a good time. We hope to see them back as regulars as well as at Rally Cross and Solo events.

Gordon & Teresa Benson led the pack, with Scott Bitzer and Steve Winegar were a close second. Jim Wiles paired up with Eric Blackmon to finish third. Our newbies finished fourth, with EB Lunken & Chuck Thompson bringing up the rear.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR THE JUNE 16TH EVENT, the 222 Shuffle. We will be starting from the Quaker Steak & Lube in Milford. Drivers and Navigators unite and sign up on MotorSportReg.com. Bring teams of your neighbors, friends or co-workers (who have not participated with us in the last two years) and you and each team you bring will receive a $5 discount off the registration fee. If you need to be paired up with a running partner, let us know and we’ll do our best. Our rallies always end at a location disclosed before you start your drive and is always a family friendly place with food and adult beverages available. Competition promises to be fierce for the 2018 Series Championship.

For those new to the sport, Road Rallies are run on public roads at legal (sometimes brisk) speeds on a variety of roads. Route instructions can be challenging but if you are careful you will NOT get lost. Any street licensed vehicle capable of accommodating a driver and a navigator who can communicate safely (so probably not a motorcycle) from a smart car to a pickup truck are eligible and kids are welcome. Penalty points are given for incorrect answers to questions that can be answered by making observations along the route. Low score wins. Awards are presented for each event and points are assigned based on finishing position to determine a series champion.

The schedule as it now stands is as follows:

Date Rally Master
April 14 EB Lunken
May 26 Jim Knepper
June 16 Colleen Cabe
July 21 Lee Grimes
August 25 Jim Wiles
October 6 Gordon Benson
November 3 TBD

One more date is still available if you’d like to set up a rally. Assistance can be provided. Contact me if you have questions.

Race Report

Thanks to all who responded to the survey. The comments were enlightening, and we are trying to incorporate the wishes of the drivers and volunteers into our already successful event.

Plan continue to progress for the Todd Cholmondeley IT-Spec*tacular Double Regional Road Race Saturday & Sunday August 4th and 5th at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH. Our event is a fan favorite and we are known for offering a good time for all who attend. Plans are still in the works but you can expect the usual good racing and good food along with the deluxe JELLO SHOTS, renowned across the whole of Great Lakes Division.

Not a racer? Bring your street car (or solo car) and sign up for the Track Event on Friday August 3rd (formerly PDX). You will get several sessions of track time with a competition driver as a coach. Stay for Saturday or the whole weekend and get a taste of race life. Earn a rebate off your entry fee for volunteering to work a specialty and support the race.
Want to get across the fence and watch the racing up close and personal? – Flagging & Communication
Want to get touchy feely with the cars and talk to the drivers before their session? – Grid
Want to get into the technical workings of the cars? – Scrutineer
Want to help score the cars on the track (and stay out of the weather)? – Timing & Scoring
Lots of help is needed to make a weekend go off smoothly. Let me know what you think you want to do and I’ll find a place (and a contact/mentor) for you. Or just let me know you want to be involved and you can choose from a wide array of duties that need to be covered.

Solo Report

Like a good course, April flowed smoothly right into a very successful May.

We started it off with the Phase 1 and Phase 2 Evolution Performance Driving Schools on May 5 & 6, respectively. Both were sell outs (30 students each) and went extremely well. We even had two local instructors who did a fantastic job, Dave Montgomery and Danny Popp, but that takes nothing away from the others who flew in from across the country to instruct! Nothing but kudos for the fantastic job the instructors did and the training they provided. I’ve been autocrossing since ’85, signed up for the Phase 2 school, and whereas I can’t say I learned anything dramatically new, it certainly emphasized and helped me focus on areas in which to approve my skills as well as giving me a whole slew of runs to practice/improve them. Highly encourage everyone to take one of their schools which are held all over the country!

Our second Points Event, May 20 was a huge success too. We hit our online cap on Tuesday, ended up with 136 competitors, and were able to get everyone six (6) runs on a 40-50 sec course with time for fun runs after trophies! Thank you to all who made this possible! At the event we not only had the live timing broadcast via the internet but also broadcast on FM locally. Closest battle was in HS where Sam Warden in his Fiesta ST held off Tom Orf in his Honda Accord by 0.141 secs on the strength of his 5th run. Again our biggest class was the Novice class at 25 entrants where Dan Gravett took the win in his Fiesta ST (I see a trend) by 0.207 seconds over Bobby Blankenship in his BMW M3. The Index classes are really popular with 81 of the entrants choosing those for stronger competition over the standard SCCA classes.

Next event is Jun 23. It is now a joint MVSCC/Cincy/SDAC event with it being a MVSCC points event and the autocross portion of a national convention for the Shelby Dodge Auto Club. Sunday, Jun 24 is Cincy Regions 3rd Points Event. Pre-register and come out to run both events!

Both registrations are open at MotorsportReg.com

See you in 3 weeks!

RallyCross Report

On Sunday May 20th, 50 competitors in 8 classes met at the Ross County Fairgrounds for Points Event number 2… With rainouts for PE#1, the days 1st event of the season was not without its challenges, some wireless timing issues reared its ugly head and slowed the morning runs but as the day moved along things did straighten themselves out!

Duane Simons led the pack to take the win in Stock All!

Evan Gill crushed the Stock front field!

John Voegeli took the top podium spot in Stock Rear!

Kyle Kreitzer edged out a win In Prepared All!

John E England led the field In Prepared Ffront!

Orion Fairman for the win in Mod All!

William Ehrman took the honor of Mod Front!

Paul Eddleston added another notch in 911 history in Mod Rear!

A big thanks to all who attended the first of hopefully many events at this venue! It was great to see so many new faces and so many familiar faces!
Here’s to a great 2018 season! If anyone is interested in helping in any of the specialties like timing and scoring, registration or event setup please ask
What you can do to help!
