Road Rally Report – December 2017

And the 2017 series champions are…….. (drum roll)

Gordon & Teresa Benson. Finishing second were Gary & Brigitte Spicer, and in third were Scott & Reghan Bitzer. 63 participants took part in at least one of the six rallies, several of whom also set up courses. A couple safety stewards also pitched in even though they weren’t able to run on any of the event days (thanks Colleen Cabe and Jerry Cabe). It takes considerable effort to put on a rally and without the contributions of many individuals, we would not have a successful program.

Thanks to our 2017 Rally Masters (in alphabetical order):
Gordon Benson (& his better half, Teresa), Lee Grimes, Jim Knepper, Dick Krehbiel, EB Lunken, and Jim Wiles. Please come do it again in 2018.

If you’d like to be a part of the planning committee next year, become qualified as a Safety Steward, or lay out a course, chime in. Many hands make light work, and new ideas are always welcome.

I’ve already seen some of the routes in the works for next year. You won’t want to miss it. Come for the roads, stay for the people.

This is a great drive thru Southern Indiana, rolling along the river, thru interesting little towns, up and down curvy country roads – something for everyone. No gravel, but a little rough in a very few places.

We start at the CVS on 50 in Lawrenceburg and end down the street at Strong’s Brick Oven Pizzeria. The course is a bit over 100 miles and should take a bit under 3 hours, not including any stops or backtracking.

Rally Report – September, 2017

6 teams and two drivers who just wanted to go for a drive on a beautiful Saturday afternoon competed in the Covered Bridge Tour. Everyone finished, as we welcomed newcomers Austin Henson and Brooke Steele. Congratulations to winners Gary & Brigitte Spicer and Lee Grimes & Loretta Workman. Both teams finished with scores of minus 2 and opted to share the accolades rather than play a hand of poker to break the tie. Well deserved congratulations to both teams. Gordon & Teresa Benson, regulars (and rally masters for September), finished second with minus ½. The actual “winners” were Lindsey & Susan Wiles, but since this was not their first time seeing the course, Rallymaster Jim Wiles disqualified them. Thanks to Jim Knepper for checking out the route for me. His retirement is certainly a boon to our region!

How did teams end up with negative points, you ask. Bonus point deductions for finding and photographing Barn Quilts. If you don’t know what they are….maybe you should join us. We provide competition, fun, AND education.

Our next rally date is September 16. Details will be coming soon. Look for a Facebook post and email with details. Save the date! Now that race season is (mostly) over, I’ll get the points caught up and posted as soon as I can for the series championship.

Rally Report – August, 2017

11 teams competed in Jim’s July Jaunt on a hot Saturday afternoon. We made it short before the worst heat set in and because everyone is busy this time of year. Everyone finished-eventually; only 1 team got lost, but since they drove up and down the one street that had what turned out to be the toughest question, they got it right and finished with a perfect score. Congratulations to Steve Munday and his crack navigation team of teens Jacob & Makayla.

In a three way tie for second were John & Dick Krehbiel, Joe & Mary Beth O’Gorman and Jim & Bob Zeisler with 1 point. All but one other team was in a tie for third with 2 points. Those teams were Gordon & Teresa Benson, Gary & Brigitte Spicer, Terry & Denise Challenger, Gordon Maciulewicz & Paul McGloin, Tom O’Gorman & Dave Montgomery and Scott Giles & Renee Hines. Bringing up the rear were our beloved speedsters EB Lunken & Tim Silver. A huge thank you goes to Rally Master Jim Knepper, who jumped in with both feet and set up a beautiful and varied drive with a quick turn-around time. As a side note – Jim is also letting me borrow his truck to tow the trailer to Mid Ohio for the Todd Cholmondeley IT Spec*tacular, even though he can’t go himself. We’re getting a good one here folks!

Our next rally date is August 26. Details will be coming soon. Look for a Facebook post and email with details. Save the date!
