RoadRace Report

“Spring has sprung, the grass has ris’, I wonder where the race cars is?” They’re either getting ready for the 2021 Todd Cholmondeley IT Spec*tacular double divisional race weekend or they’re anxiously awaiting the opportunity to shake off the cobwebs and hit the track. Or they migrated south, where racing has already begun. There are a few races around Great Lakes Division before the Cincy race, but the July 31-August 1 weekend will be the first regional event of the year at Mid-Ohio. The Track Event on July 30th will give non-competition licensed drivers a chance to get their street or solo cars on the track, hopefully for TIMED laps this year. Race Committee meetings have resumed on the second Tuesday of each month. If you would like to be a part of the planning process or have requests for the committee to consider, please respond by message, email, or phone. All are welcome, but you must let us know. The March meeting will be via Zoom at the later starting time of 8PM. Direct questions to the following email or phone number.

Race Report

I hope you have blocked out July 30-August 1 on your summer calendar to join us at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for our Todd Cholmondeley IT Spec*tacular double divisional race weekend and Track Event. This is an extremely popular event in the Great Lakes Division race world. There are ample opportunities to be involved both on and off the track. Come work and we’ll feed you lunch, and you can come to the Saturday night picnic in the worker campground. Besides good eats there will be special Jell-O desserts. We are looking forward to this year’s event given we had to cancel last year due to Covid.

I’m attending the 2021 National Convention. You can too! Any member can be a part of it without cost, without the hassle of packing, schlepping to the airport, and being apart from family. Like so many things in 2020, SCCA is going high-tech with a virtual convention. All the information you need to know can be found on the my.scca.com website. Sessions on every program – race, solo, road rally, rally cross- as well as general direction of the club will be offered, along with marketing, operational guidelines and other club supporting information. Even the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony can be viewed. Step out of your current relationship with SCCA and see what’s behind the scenes. Sessions will take place January 23 – February 21. Registration is required and is free.

Meanwhile, progress is being made for our July 30 – August 1 race weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. There are two non SCCA race groups that plan to join our weekend of track day/racing activities, which should be fun to watch. With COVID not totally behind us quite yet, our traditional Track Event with in-car coaches is in limbo. Hopefully by July we’ll be back to business as usual. There’s lots of planning to do. Let us know if you want to be a part of it!

Cincy Region’s date at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is set! Mark your calendars now and reserve the weekend of July 30 through August 1, 2021. Planning will begin soon for our Track Event on Friday and for our Double Divisional Championship Series Runoffs Qualifying Club Racing Event on Saturday and Sunday. Sound like a mouthful? That’s indicative of the amount of work it takes to host the event. If you would like to be part of the planning or the execution, let us know and you can “come” to a planning meeting. Committee meetings will begin in February and will likely be via Zoom. The Friday event will be open to street cars and solo prepared cars. Race car drivers will likely have an opportunity to test as well. No competition license is required for the Friday event. This is an extremely popular event among novice and more experienced drivers alike. Saturday and Sunday will feature wheel to wheel racing among drivers vying for Divisional Championship points. There are many opportunities to volunteer your services which will get you up close and personal with the cars and drivers. The tentative race schedule for the Great Lakes Division can be found on the cincyscca website.

Race Report

Great Lakes Division managed to hold several races this year, even though we got off to a slow and very tenuous start. Besides our usual tracks – Mid Ohio, GingerMan, and Grattan, Detroit Region hosted a race this year at Waterford Hills Raceway, and Cincinnati Region along with NEOHIO Region co-hosted a race at Nelson Ledges. Both tracks were new to the Championship Series trail, though hardly new to road racing. Getting back on track brought several challenges to overcome, from limiting the number of crew and guests, to masking, social distancing in the paddock, and limited or no Saturday evening dinners/parties. But what we were able to do was worth any aggravation we had to put up with. It was very disappointing that Cincinnati Region had to forgo putting on our Todd Cholmondeley IT*SpecTacular at Mid-Ohio, but we are hoping and expecting to be back in the game in 2021. Scheduling for the next season is underway now. Here’s hoping we can get back to a more regular season next year.

Thomas Schrage is the region’s newest hot shot driver. In his beautiful Formula F racer, he ran away with his class championship, with more than double the points of his nearest competitor. And if I remember correctly, he isn’t old enough for a State Driver’s License yet! Look for more good things from him next year.

There are many opportunities to participate in a road race weekend. The most obvious, of course, is to enter a prepared car and race. But you can also get on track in your solo car or even your daily driver. Want to get up close and personal with the cars? Have administrative skills to offer? Want to wander the paddock and check things out? There’s a place for you. You won’t know until you try it out.

Race Report

Cars are back on track! Even though we will not be hosting a race and track event at Mid-Ohio this year, we WILL be co-hosting a race weekend with NEOHIO on August 1-2 at Nelson Ledges Road Course in Garrettsville, Ohio.

Friday, July 31 will offer test sessions for racers as well as track time for non-competition drivers – similar to our traditional Track Event, but due to COVID-19 there will be no in car coaching. Other restrictions due to the current pandemic situation will be in effect, but CARS ARE BACK ON TRACK.

Registration opens July 1. Some details are still being worked out since everything is in flux from a medical safety standpoint. Details will be released when possible. Check the CincySCCA.com website or MotorsportReg.com for information and to register. The name of the event is Back Home at Nelson 2020.
