Welcome to the last month of the 2021 solo season or should I say welcome, welcome, welcome to the last month of the 2021 solo season? 🙂. Hard to believe we are nearing the end (if I ignore the cold, rainy weather and how early it gets dark outside…) So here goes:

Points Event 7 – Oct 3
Speaking of rain, this event was forecasted to be wet and boy was it ever. WOR and CKR cancelled, possibly being the wiser of us, but we welcomed any of their entrants. Even with the rain, we had 131 entrants, not bad at all. I personally much prefer dry courses, but have to admit I still had fun even if it felt like I was driving in snow with the sealed asphalt surface. Tightest competition was in HS where Nick Maludy edged out AJ Allen by 0.091 secs. Our Novice classes had the greatest showing with 14 each in both Novice Street (which was won my Robert Beck) and Novice Modified (which was won by Zachery Eavers.). Both Fastest Time of Day and Top PAX times went to Nathan Johnson with a raw time of 40.193 secs and a PAX time of 32.837 secs.

Challenge Event – Oct 23
Our Challenge Event was held a couple weeks ago on the only dry day of the weekend. We had 76 entrants get six runs in the morning to vie for the 32 challenge spots based on the top 16 by PAX in the two heats. Entrants were then paired and advanced by having the most improvement off their dial in time. Those who qualified got two runs in the first round and one run each round thereafter. In the end Richard Verret became our inaugural champion taking the win over Ron Schoch in a hard fought battle, and Bill Hughes edged out Nick Wilmot for Third/Fourth place respectively. Congrats to all, it was a lot of fun to cheer on everyone in the challenge.

Points Event 8 – Nov 7
This event was originally scheduled for Oct 24 but had to me moved due to miserably cold and wet weather on the 24th. The forecast went from cool and sunny as late as Wed that week to monsoon, windy, and frigid by that Sat during the Challenge Event. It was a tough call to make because we understand so many people have planned their schedules around our events long in advance and the unknowns of weather in Nov. In the end, the weather ended up just as bad as the forecast. Fingers crossed for Nov…. Good luck to all who are in tight battles for the year end points championships. (Best 5 events count, 4 events needed to qualify. Year end trophies based on number of those qualified in class.)

I was negligent and didn’t get a solo report out last month. A lot has happened over the last two months and a there is a lot yet to happen before the 2021 season wraps up. I could write a book, but will just try to hit the high points.

2021 TireRack SCCA Solo National Championships

First and foremost, we sent nineteen (19!) Cincy members to the SCCA National Championships and had our own Cincy paddock area!

If you haven’t ever gone, you should go and make a week of it so you can take in all aspects of it, the parties, paddock games/events, cookouts, banquets, restaurants with friends, meeting new friends, heck even the trip there an back, etc. Ask Mike Wolf, Ben Weaver, or Tact Takagi since they experienced it for their first time this year. (Okay, Ben was there 12 years ago as a toddler, but this was his first time as a competitor.) Congrats to all the trophy winners and everyone who represented Cincy Region, as this is some of the toughest competition you will find on some of the biggest grippy concrete courses, along with all the other fun! August Events

Novice 101 – Aug 21 – We held our second Novice 101 event of the year and just like the first, it was very successful. We had 20 instructors/helpers come out to help 41 students improve their driving skills as well as learning how to work course and other key positions to help improve their enjoyment. If you are a novice and interested in running one of our events, you are welcome to enter any event even if you haven’t taken a Novice 101 school, these are just to help you do better and have more fun. Remember, you are eligible to run as a novice for your first full year of autocross competition, but it is not mandatory, you can also run in one of our other classes.

Points Event #5 – Aug 22 – We had 176 entrants for this event, which was one of the hottest events of the year, if not for several years. I was told there were pyrometer readings in grid in the 130 F to 140 F range. Over the weekend, we went through over 30 cases of bottled water! Glad everyone stayed hydrated. Even with the extreme heat and over 170 entrants, we were able to give everyone six runs and still finish running before 4:00. The closest margin of victory went to Keith Koegler over the car owner, Jack Burns in Street Open, by 0.020 secs. Fastest Time of Day and Fastest on PAX both went to Rob Clark in his C8 Corvette with a 43.428 sec run.

September Events

Great Lakes Solo Series (GLSS) Event #9 – Cincy served as the site for the capstone events of the 2021 GLSS series. I’m proud to say once again we put on what most people felt were stellar events even with what felt like temperatures in the 100s (although officially only in the 80s.) We were able to give seven runs to the 95 drivers on Saturday, present trophies, and have over an hour of fun runs completed all by 4:00 pm. The closest battle was in XA where Brandon Mihal in his STi edged Scott Baker in his RX8 by 0.101 secs on his fifth run. Fastest Raw Time went to Neva Hoover in her KM Honda CRG Kart with a 40.818 sec run and top PAX went to Rob Clark in his C8 Corvette with a raw time of 40.859 secs

Great Lakes Solo Series (GLSS) Event #10/Cincy Points Event #6 – On Sunday, we were able to give the 168 drivers six runs, present trophies at 3:30, pack up, and be off-site by 4:36 after a very warm, yet successful weekend. Whereas both Saturday’s and Sunday’s courses were fun and fairly fast, Sunday’s was changed substantially from Saturday’s, and most liked the mix of Sunday’s better. The closest battle of this event and of the year goes to Jason Rector who edged out Adam Austin both in Fiesta STs by 0.002 secs and both improving by roughly 0.3 secs on their last runs! It was a fun battle to watch as the lead swapped between the two. Fastest Raw went to Christian Moist in his DM Birkin 7 with a time of 37.590 secs and fastest PAX went to Rob Clark in his C8 Corvette with a raw time of 37.817 secs.

The GLSS has asked us to host events again next year, which I am glad to report we intent to do. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for making this event so successful and helping raise $5000 for the American Stroke Association!

Upcoming Events

Points Event #7 – Oct 3 – Our next event is this coming Sunday. The points battles are in full swing as many of the class standings and trophies are hotly contested. Come out and fight to earn that trophy and just have fun!

Challenge Event – Oct 23 – We are planning to hold a Challenge event again this year even though timing errors killed the event last year. This event will be run similar to the CAM Challenge events where everyone will get 4 or more runs in the morning (# of runs tbd based on # of entrants) to determine who gets into the challenge brackets. Current plan is for the top eight (8) competitors per each of the four heats by PAX to get into the challenge! Of course all of this is subject to adjustments based on number of entrants. Should be a great time!

Points Event #8 – Oct 24 – Our last points event of 2021 will follow the Challenge Event. Time to finalize the trophy competitions!

Fall Fun Event – Nov 7 – Alas, the last event of the season. A chance to come out and play one last time before winter hibernation takes over.

The Silly Season
Welcome to the silly season!  July and August (and really September) are the crazy busy months for autocross and our Cincy members in the Midwest and Cincy Region is certainly a part of that.  Since my report a month ago, we have held a Starting Line event, our fourth Points Event, and both a Phase 1 and Phase 2 Evolution Performance Driving School in July.  In August we will have our second Novice 101 School and our fifth Points Event.  All of these are worked around a busy schedule for many of us with the Bristol Summer Nationals (ProSolo and Champ Tour on July 1-4), the Toledo ProSolo on July 23-25, the Oscoda ProSolo Jul 29-Aug 1, Peru CAM Challenge Aug 6-8, Great Lakes Div Solo Series (GLSS) Events Jul 17-18 in Fort Wayne, GLSS @ Grissom ARB on Aug 14-15, Goodguys in Columbus Jul7 9-11, Motorstate Challenge Jul 15-17, UMI Autocross Challenge Jul 24-25, DriveAutoX @ Grissom Jul 31-Aug 1, etc…  Whew, tough to keep track of it all unless you put it in your calendar.  Thankfully, we have a link to the “Area Motorsports Schedule” on our 2021 Solo Schedule/Results page www.cincyscca.com.

Starting Line School, July 10
We had sixteen (16) students at our SCCA Starting Line school on July 10.  The instructors did a phenomenal job instructing the new members on everything about autocross, improving the entrants driving skills, and introducing them to everything SCCA has to offer. Everyone I spoke with during and after the event were very happy with the results.  Highly recommend looking up other Starting Line events across the country and signing up if you are new to autocross or wait until next year when we host another one. 

Points Event #4, Jul 11
The weather forecast once again was horrible and unfortunately it delivered for the 145 of us who braved it and showed up anyway.  To say the first and part of the second heat runs were wet would be an understatement.  During course walks, we had to modify the course to avoid the lake which formed in the middle of the course where the drains just couldn’t keep up with the storms leading to water easily 6-8” deep.  Thankfully, the other lakes were in paddock or grid instead of on course.  Even better, the drains did catch up and we didn’t have the lake issue during runs.  I have to give kudos to my team and the entrants, thanks to everyone’s effort, we were able to give six (6) runs, award trophies, and offer an hour plus of fun runs in the dry and still be done by 5:00!  The closest battles were in C Street, Pro, and CAM S.  In C Street, Shari McCoy put down a runner on her fifth run to take the win over Tyler Fullington in his S2000 by the closest battle of the day, a 0.034 sec win.  In CAM S, Marshall Reinert held off Jamie Elliott by a mere 0.036 secs for the win.  Not to be outdone, in Pro Class, Nathan Roberts on the strength of his last run was able to edge out Rob Clark by 0.040 secs for the win.  Nathan Popp pulled off the trifecta winning CAM T, having Top Raw Time of the Day, and Top PAX Time of the Day.  Congrats to all!

Evolution Performance Driving School, Jul 17-18
We had originally planned our Phase 1 and Phase 2 schools in early May, but those ended up being COVID casualties.  Thankfully, we were able to find a place to squeeze them in the schedule for July 17 and 18.  We had 18 students for the Phase 1 school on Saturday and 17 for the Phase 2 school on Sunday.  If you have never taken one of these schools, I highly recommend them!  Even if you have, they are fantastic refreshers to take again to help you break bad habits or realize where/why you aren’t driving the car to its full limits.  Even with the wet conditions early on Sat for the Phase 1 school, it was still a great help.  Again here, everyone was ecstatic with the instruction they received from Robert Carpenter, Brian Burdette, and Bryan Schafer!

Lastly, I want to take a moment to offer a sincere thank you to everyone for their prayers and support given to Danny Popp and his family.  This really should have been the first thing, because the solo family and friends are far, FAR more important than the competition aspect of any of the events which we get to enjoy.  For any of you who may not have heard by now, Danny Popp suffered a stroke on Jun 29^th.  Stacy and Nathan responded quickly and got him to the hospital within 30 minutes of symptoms.  Thankfully the doctors have said there is no permanent damage, but clearly there is a battle ahead for him and his family as he goes through the long process of recovery.  Along that line, Danny reports “Get a little better EVERY day!!”  I have silver or blue “10” stickers available at no cost if you would like to show your support.  If you’d like to donate, there is a GoFundMe page set up at:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/danny-popps-medical-expenses

Novice 101 – It’s been a month since some of you have heard from me and only two-weeks for those of you who were able to make it out to our Novice 101 and/or Points Event #2 on May 15 & 16. Nick Isaac and Bill Hughes did a fantastic job on the Novice 101 event organizing and providing instructors for 52 students. Instruction not only focused on driver skills, but how to read the course during a course walk, driver position, corner/other working positions, getting the car ready, etc. There were two courses in the morning sessions where the students got to focus on different aspects such as a slalom and Chicago Box or a separate course which emphasized looking ahead, threshold braking, cornering speeds, etc. In the afternoon, we hooked it all together and the students got to demonstrate what all they learned on the segments and continue to hone their skills.

Points Event 2, May 16 – The event started off with a sketchy weather forecast in line with the other two Sunday events, all of which have promised rain. Unfortunately, we did not escape totally, but it “only” did that “r thing” during registration, tech, etc and the first three runs of Heat 1 thankfully, with it warming up enough to leave some nice sunburns on those who didn’t use sunscreen. We had over 190 registered prior to the event but with the forecast only 169 took runs. Due to everyone’s help, we were able to give 6 runs again and still be done running by 4:00. The closest battle, and this was really close, was in Novice Street where we had 15 entrants, the top 5 were separated by 0.528 secs, and Tyler Donaldson in his Veloster on his last run dropped 0.214 secs to take the win by a mere 0.005 secs over Bryan Morell in his Civic Type R. Street Open, 17 entrants, also had a very narrow margin of victory where Jack Burns edged out Dale Kunze on his last run both in Civic Si’s by a mere 0.031. Pro Class, seven deep, was another where Rob Clark in his C8 Corvette edged out Dave Montgomery in his Camaro SS by a mere 0.066 secs. In both raw and PAX, Rob Clark pulled off the trifecta taking his class as well as top PAX and top time of day.

Next event, Points Event 3 is Jun 13th. If you haven’t registered yet, please do. We already reached our cap of 175 as of last week (three weeks out), but please register on the waitlist so as people cancel you can still make it in possibly/probably. You will not be charged until registration closes late on Jun 10th. Those who make it in will be notified after registration closes Thur, Jul 10 @10pm.

Reminder:
We have been able to get everyone six (6) runs so far even with 170 entrants because for the most part people have been prompt and on time during registration, tech, worker check-in/change-over, and with their cars when they are ready to be sent. That said, we are starting to get people showing up later for registration and tech. In order to start on-time and maximize the number of runs we can offer, we need everyone’s cooperation in being timely for the following:
Registration 07:30 – 08:30
(Please note, late fees will be assessed or we may have to turn you away if too late. Please contact us if some emergency occurs which is making you late.)
Tech Inspection 07:30 – 08:45
Driver’s Meeting 09:30 or earlier
Worker Change-Over – We have started trying to do worker change over on the fly, please check-in during the last run of the heat prior to your work heat and head out during the last runs to minimize/eliminate down-time between heats. and maximize the number of runs we can provide.

Event Registration – All of our events for the remainder of 2021 are now listed in MotorsportReg; however, registration for each event will not open until six (6) weeks prior to the event. If/when you click on the event registration, it will state when registration opens.

Travel to other events! – There are so many other regions and clubs which put on autocrosses in the area. Be a part of the traveling Cincy crowd and experience other venues. We have many regularly going to Western Ohio Region (Dayton), Fort Wayne (duh) , Indy (Grissom ARB or others), Miami Valley Sports Car Club (Dayton), Ohio Valley Region (Columbus), Central Kentucky Region (Lexington, KY), Akron Sports Car Club, Northwest Ohio Region (Toledo), etc. We also have the benefit of the Great Lakes Solo Series (GLSS) in which Cincy has two events in Sept) but also offers four other weekends at Grissom or Parkersburg, West Virginia, or in Fort Wayne. Don’t forget the SCCA National level events such as the Championship Tour at Grissom this coming weekend, a Pro in Toledo, a Championship Tour and Pro Solo in Bristol, TN, etc.

The 2021 Solo Season has begun!

Apr 10/11 Test & Tune / Spring Fun Event 1

Our first two event weekends are in the book! We started out with a limited-entry Test and Tune (T&T) on Apr 10 followed by our first Spring 2021 Fun Event on Apr 11. The weather really didn’t cooperate as it was wet and/or cold, but we had 50 entrants who braved the weather on the 10th and 138 on the 11th even though both events were well over their registration cap limits leading up to registration closure. All in all, it was a good two days of learning (relearning) and competition, a good way to shake off the cobwebs and meet up with friends it seems like forever sine we saw last. As April 10 was run as a true T&T format, there were no times posted. Sunday was run as a fun event with 138 entrants using our standard four heat format and established the initial basis of our four heat system to be used the rest of the season. Run/Work will follow the same basic pattern with the same basic classes together, but it will shift one later each event (exceptions may be made as required for number of entrants, classes, critical work assignments, etc.) Everyone got five runs in an attempt to get dry runs for all but it didn’t quite work out that way.
The closest competition was a battle of the Mustangs in CAM-C where Krzysztof Zielinski edged out Ron Schoch by a mere 0.025 seconds. CAM again set the tone with 28 entrants, and the largest class was the highly competitive Street Open with 17 entrants followed closely by CAM-S with 15 entrants. I’m happy to report the Novice Classes are starting to make a comeback now that we have single assignment loaner helmets with nine (9) in Novice Street led by Christina Harp and five (5) in Novice Modified led by Zachary Eavers. Joel Zeller battled Jason Rector, both of HS for the top two PAX times. Results are posted on our website.

Apr 24/25 Spring Fun Event 2 / Points Event 1

Spring Fun Event 2 – Our second event weekend came up very quick after the first, seemingly didn’t skip a weekend even though it really did. Again, the weather wasn’t real cooperative as rain was forecast for Sat in what looked like it would be a real soaker and cooler temperatures all day. Due to the forecast, we only ended up with 70 entrants on Saturday (down from over 100) and as a result chose to run it as a Test & Tune format. As it turned out, the rain arrived half-way through the day Sat making for a cold and wet day where times in the wet were lucky to be within 5 – 7 seconds of the dry times, but many of the entrants had eight or more runs. Still a definite learning experience as you never know what the weather will be like for the points events later in the season. The closest battle was again in CAM C where this time Max Mishcenko edged Krzysztof Zielinski by 0.002 secs. CAM again had a large contingent with 17 entrants between the three classes and CAM S had the largest class with 10 entrants. Points Event 1 – For Sunday, our first points event, we had 197 registered (with a cap of 160), determined we could let in 180, and ended up with 175 entrants after all was said and done. The weather stayed dry, but was cool/cold throughout most of the day with the sun finally coming out late enough to give many their first sunburn of the year. With worker change-overs on the fly, and everyone’s cooperation being on time and ready, we were able to get everyone six (6) runs and be done running by 4:15 on what was described as a fast, fun, yet technical course where one had to really thread the needle. CAM continued to have a strong contingent with 40 entrants (of the 175) between the three classes and the single largest class of the event was CAM S with 24 entrants. The closest battle was in CAM T with Nathan Popp edging out Brian Coney by 0.135 secs in their very different but very fast Camaros. Novice classes continued their comeback with Novice Street being led by Louis Brinkman in his Civic and Corey Pooler in his Focus ST. PAX was dominated by the Pro Class with 6 of the top 10 and the top 5 all being in Pro with Rob Clark and Robert Pendergest in Rob’s C8 bookending Dave Montgomery in his Camaro SS 1LE. Unfortunately due to various delays, event trophies were not available for those who earned one, but will be available at the Novice 101 / Points Event 2 weekend May 15 & 16. • Novice 1010 School – I already hinted at it, but our first Novice 101 School is Saturday, May 15. Registration is open, but entries are limited so we can provide full instruction.

Random Reminders:

• I have the 2020 Year End Solo Trophies for those of you who earned one and still haven’t picked it up. Heck, I still have a few 2019 trophies too.
• I will have the Points Event 1 trophies for those who earned one at the next event, May 15 & 16.
• COVID – We are still under COVID procedures, please continue to social distance and wear a mask when you are close to others. Minor changes from late last year or this year: Passengers are permitted if both have face masks or full-face helmets with shields. We do have single driver assignment loaner helmets available.
• Our events are popular thanks to you, please register early as we have been hitting the entry cap one to two weeks before the event. If when you register the cap has already been met, please go ahead and register on the waitlist. This will greatly increase your chance of making it in.
• No charges will be made to your account until registration closes @ 10:00 pm on the Thursday before the event.
• If you are registered and not going to be able to make the event, please cancel before Thur 10 pm so that others on the waitlist can attend. If you cancel after registration closes, there is no refund or credit toward the next event (exceptions apply) as you are preventing someone else from attending.
• Please come to Tech Inspection with numbers and letters on your car. Numbers must be a contrasting color to the car and a min of 8” tall and letters 4” tall. If using painters tape for the first event or so, please use the 2” wide tape.
• With the larger number of entrants, please follow the paddock guidelines so all can fit nicely (only large trailers/motorhomes along the building, trucks w/ up to 26 ft trailers in the middle, single cars in the front row or middle nose to tail.)
